What is Orthodontic Treatment

Having a beautifully straight smile can have a very positive impact on one’s life. However, most people are not born with perfect teeth. With the advancements in orthodontic treatment, smiles can be transformed.

Orthodontic treatment is a dental specialty that works to correct misaligned teeth and jaws. It addresses overcrowding, gaps between teeth, crooked teeth, poor bite patterns – and that’s just the beginning of what it can do.

Although adults can take advantage of these treatments, too, orthodontic care usually starts with children. Most kids should be assessed for orthodontic treatment by the time they are 6 or 7 years old. As they are still developing and growing, steps can be taken to reduce the need for more advanced or complex ortho treatment in the future.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Having straight teeth and a perfectly aligned bite is more important than just its beautiful appearance. With orthodontic treatment, your child will have:

  • Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Better jaw alignment
  • A higher level of oral hygiene – and lower risk of tooth decay

Early orthodontic treatment can lead to:

  • A correction of harmful oral habits
  • Increased speaking ability
  • Reduction in bruxism

Once you make the decision for your child to have orthodontic care, you are taking a step in the direction toward a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Procedures Offered

At Dental Associates for Kids Only, LLP, we offer interceptive (or early) orthodontic treatment. This means we will evaluate, diagnose, and treat certain issues in order to prevent greater orthodontic needs in the future. We offer:

  • Habit appliances that are used to stop habits such as thumb or finger habits and address proper tongue positions and swallowing patterns.
  • Space maintenance to keep teeth from moving while waiting for permanent teeth to erupt.
  • Distalizer/molar rotation is used to position molars so that they are ready for braces when the time comes.

For our patients requiring further orthodontic care, we work in tandem with our external partner, Luccarelli & Barrese Orthodontics, to provide traditional metal braces and Invisalign for our patients to have perfectly straight smiles.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating brackets have some advantages over traditional metal braces. The primary difference is that they do not use elastics or metal ties to connect the archwire to the brackets. There are several potential benefits to choosing self-ligating brackets if it is determined that they are a good option for your treatment.

Aesthetics – Self-ligating brackets may appear smaller than traditional brackets.

Cleaning – The absence of elastics and ties can it easier for patients with self-ligating braces to keep their teeth and braces clean, although special care and attention to daily cleaning is important with any type of orthodontic treatment.

Appointment Time – Adjustment appointments are often shorter with this efficient system due to the specialized brackets that hold the archwire within the bracket.

Treatment Time – Overall treatment time with self-ligating orthodontic brackets is often shorter than that of traditional metal braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are a great solution for professionals or for anyone who prefers not to have the braces visible. Lingual braces are placed behind your teeth so that you get the same effective tooth alignment to create a beautiful smile, without everyone realizing you have braces.

Clear Aligners

Clear Aligners

A modern approach to straightening teeth, clear aligners involves using a series of custom made aligners to gradually and gently shift the teeth into place. Made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth, the aligners are easy to use, just changing into a new set of aligners every 2 weeks until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life, even while most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can my child benefit from interceptive orthodontics?

Interceptive orthodontics reduces the need for severe or complex ortho issues as they get older. It addresses the jaw structure and teeth – well before permanent teeth erupt.

Is early orthodontic treatment needed?

Your child doesn’t need to have their orthodontic needs addressed early, but it can be beneficial as it can address certain issues as the child is still growing and developing.

At what age do kids get braces?

There is no set age for getting braces. Orthodontists often look for some or all permanent teeth before they start treating them with braces. Because kids grow at different rates, this age may vary.
